چکیده

Studies of seasonal changes of ERS-2 SAR backscatter from sub-Arctic lakes and forest-tundra fire scars in Chukotka, Russia, have been carried out for the four seasons of the period between 2000 and 2004. Correlation analyses of time series of radar backscatter from the set of 13 lakes within Anadyr Lowland distinguished 3 groups of lakes. Time-series studies of SAR observations of the fire risk areas in the vicinity of Vaegi Village before and after fires give an assessment of forest-tundra damage that can be used in land use inventories. The snow masking effect of tundra fire scars and wet snow case were also demonstrated.

Envisat Asar Wide Swath Backscatter Dynamics of the Siberial Boreal Forest Fire Scar

Wildfires significantly affect the boreal ecosystem of Siberia. However, records on burnt areas and fire impact are still not satisfactory in Russia. The dense smoke from active burning and the persistent cloud covers impeded the application of optical sensors to the detection of burnt area in Siberia forest during the summer fire season. The high resolution SAR data are of limited use for burn...

Variability of tundra fire regimes in Arctic Alaska: millennial-scale patterns and ecological implications

Tundra fires have important ecological impacts on vegetation, wildlife, permafrost, and carbon cycling, but the pattern and controls of historic tundra fire regimes are poorly understood. We use sediment records from four lakes to develop a 2000-yr fire and vegetation history in a highly flammable tundra region and compare this history with previously published fire records to examine spatial a...

Satellite-observed photosynthetic trends across boreal North America associated with climate and fire disturbance.

We analyzed trends in a time series of photosynthetic activity across boreal North America over 22 years (1981 through 2003). Nearly 15% of the region displayed significant trends, of which just over half involved temperature-related increases in growing season length and photosynthetic intensity, mostly in tundra. In contrast, forest areas unaffected by fire during the study period declined in...

Response of ice cover on shallow lakes of the North Slope of Alaska to contemporary climate conditions (1950–2011): radar remote-sensing and numerical modeling data analysis

Air temperature and winter precipitation changes over the last five decades have impacted the timing, duration, and thickness of the ice cover on Arctic lakes as shown by recent studies. In the case of shallow tundra lakes, many of which are less than 3 m deep, warmer climate conditions could result in thinner ice covers and consequently, in a smaller fraction of lakes freezing to their bed in ...
